Dreaming in Color | Abstract Printmaking with Color and Texture

During this six-week class, students will explore the visual language of abstraction with color, shape and texture, while learning the basics of traditional and contemporary printmaking methods. Using adhesives, aluminum foil, and carborundum we will merge deliberate shapes with spontaneous gestures to create dramatic textural and colorful images. Then, employing the magic of layers in printmaking, students will create watercolor monotypes on a second plate to produce prints that are a rich combination of color, movement and abstract expression.

Observational Painting

This course engages students who are committed to learning how to capture the likeness of their subject. Using acrylic paint and canvas, students will learn various methods to create representational paintings using their selected photograph or still life as a reference. Subjects can include, but are not limited to: portraits, landscapes, animals, objects and even characters. In preparation of the primary painting, we will explore studies in observational painting with an emphasis on shape, value, proportion and composition. As your paintings come to life, you will practice color-mixing, edge control, brush usage and finally the care and handling of supplies.Students will choose reference photos or set up objects that feature dramatic effects of light, shadow, color and value. In-house photo sessions may be included as needed. A step-by-step painting strategy will lead us to completion including initial lay in, adjustments, refinements and the final stages. All skill levels are welcome.

Modern Calligraphy

This contemporary, lively and versatile script is a perfect introduction to the pointed pen. You will learn about the pen, ink and paper of calligraphy, the basics in practice strokes and technique, upper and lower case letters and numbers. During the two weekly sessions, participants will be encouraged to apply their skills while working on a variety of projects both at home and in class. The supplies fee covers everything  you need for class and to continue writing and exploring calligraphy projects at home No previous experience is necessary. Supplies fee $22 (*supplies fee may be waived for students who bring their own).

Desert Spring

              When we sink both hands into the sand with empowered intention,

              might we find a desert spring?

Desert Spring is an 8-week course designed to bring art-making back into focus for adults who decide they want regular access to that rich part of themselves. This course allows time, space and support for individual explorations back into artwork~ be it collage, painting, drawing, or new beginnings. Denese Sanders serves as colleague, mentor and facilitator of the sacred space needed for your creative renewal. During the fall session of Desert Spring, Sanders will deliver three presentations and optional exercises that focus on the theory and practical application of color and value as essential elements of 2D art. Each participant can sign up for at least two one-on-one mentor-consultations during the eight weeks, and will also be part of a collegial environment where mindful sharing of ideas occurs. The class environment is designed to allow participants to indulge in their own autonomous practice while being supported in a peaceful group setting. Participants are encouraged to bring materials & supplies to take ownership of their practice; however, our community supplies will be available to share as well as the occassional pot-luck of snacks, wine and chocolate.

**This class does not offer lessons in technical instruction outside of the individual consultations. The instructor holds the harmonious space in which she and the collective of participants work together independently with opportunities to learn from observation, reflection, and increased practice in a supportive environment.

P. I. T. | Printmakers in Training

For printmakers and printmaking students who need time, equipment and a community environment to hone the skills they’ve already learned. This “class” is akin to an Open Lab with no formal instruction; however, a seasoned printmaking monitor will be on site to hold the space with intention and guidance as needed. Participants are welcome and encouraged to collaborate, learn from, and connect with fellow PITs. The tradition and community behind printmaking is rich and deep, and this class helps foster such a community for Peninsula printmakers.  

*Non-printmakers who wish to use this time as an open lab for their two-dimensional art are welcome to register with a discount.

Basics of Darkroom Photography

This small, intimate class (limit: 4 students) will cover the basics of darkroom photography. Whether you are a novice photographer interested in learning darkroom photography or returning to the darkroom after a digital hiatus, this class is for you! Students will print from negatives, mix chemistry, operate the enlarger, and work with light as a core artistic medium.

During the first 2 weeks all students will work and learn together.  In weeks 3 and 4 they will have darkroom access in pairs for team practice. During the second four-weeks, students will have 1:1 solo instruction and private darkroom practice. Scheduling will be determined on the second day of class. * All chemicals, test papers and supplies included. Photo paper available for purchase. 

*The OGS darkroom is a shared community space; students are expected to graciously share, cooperate and collaborate with their classmates, and to help one another learn.

Open Lab Sessions: In addition to class and instruction time, one or two Open Lab Sessions may be available once students have completed the first 4 weeks of instruction and have signed a safety and etiquette agreement for safe practices in the darkroom.

Open to artists, creative adults and OGS students seeking to develop their craft or create a rhythm of weekly focused time for studio practice. 

Participants work on their own projects in a group setting with out instruction. A studio monitor will be on-site. Participants provide their own supplies and are responsible for cleanup. Community supplies may be available for use as well; paper available for purchase.
