Katie Young, Field Biologist; Erin Hunter, Scientific Illustrator; Denese Sanders, Artist Books
$160 members, $170 non-members

On Saturday your team of instructors will guide you through the historical and contemporary significance of science illustration as a means of documentation and discovery. Students will bind their own field journals and learn observational drawing techniques with the aid of floral anatomy, dissection and strategies for field journaling. Sunday will begin with a brief lesson on ecology in open spaces, field techniques including the use and design of field guides and dichotomous keys. Participants will then take their handmade book and new drawing skills to the field where we will practice observational science, field drawing and data collection at the Frog Pond, a local wetland preserve just over a mile from the studio. Through hands-on experience, we will begin to understand how vegetation patterns, biological diversity, edge effects and human development influence what we see and are able to capture through drawing and observation in the field. Desert Spring is a new ten-week session designed to bring the provocative and introspective aspects of the art-making process into focus. Intended for women of any creative persuasion, this course will merge the practical with the spiritual and the technical with the imaginative. We will address the fears that keep us from “making," and explore the vivid moments of truth that emerge, when we do. During each class, Sanders will present a method of visual arts practice to serve as a hands-on launch pad from which participants may choose to leap, meander or veer into other directions. The class environment is designed to allow women to indulge in their own autonomous practice while being guided as needed, in a collaborative and peaceful group setting. When we sink both hands into the sand with empowered intention, might we find our well within? Click here for supplies list and more details on "community supplies"

Fall Workshops 2016

WATERCOLOR MONOTYPE WORKSHOP | Sept 17
Instructor: Cindy Davis
10:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m.
$80 non-members/ $75 members
This workshop provides an easy way to transform your favorite photos into original works of art. Bring an 8-1/2" x 11" color image that we will place under a plexiglass plate. After tracing a few outlines with a crayon, you simply fill in areas with watercolor, and then print the plate on our press. The vibrant colors and lacy white lines produced by this method give a unique charm to every piece. The result is an exciting new piece, not a copy of your photo. This simple method is ideal for first-time printers and anyone who wants a fast-track to creativity without the tedium of drawing. Great fun for teens too! Bring a snack and a couple of letter-sized photos. $10 supplies fee includes printing paper and paints. *Supplies fee may be waived for students who bring their own.
FIGURE PAINTING: From Reality to Abstraction | Oct 8 & 9
Cancelled due to low enrollment. :(
Instructor: Paul Richmond
October 8 & 9, 10:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.
$250 non-members / $ 238 members (includes model fee)
Using the human figure as inspiration, this two-day workshop will help artists bridge the gap between representational and abstract painting. Participants may work in their preferred medium - oil, acrylic, watercolor, etc. On day one, we will work with a live model in a series of quick gestural and more extended poses to study anatomy, planar structure, value, and proportion. Students will receive individual demonstrations and instruction on techniques to help capture the subject in a representational manner. Photos will also be taken of the model for reference on day two, when the emphasis shifts from accuracy and detail to a more personal response to the subject. Artists from throughout history who used the figure in an imaginative way will be shared and discussed, and participants will be encouraged to create a second piece that uses the figure as a point of departure into their own more abstract interpretation. All experience levels are welcome. Bring your own supplies (click here for supplies list) or pay a $25 supplies fee and OGS will set you up with everything you'll need.
