This project is funded in part by the Arts Council for Monterey County and the Fund for Homeless Women.
Grounded Within is a partnership between The Monterey Museum of Art, The Fund for Homeless Women, Critical Ground (CG) artists and Open Ground Studios. The project will raise awareness of the unique plight of homeless women on the Monterey Peninsula and positively impact the lives of women both with, and without shelter, through artistic collaboration, production, and exhibition.
Critical Ground, a team of women artists, developed a 7-session workshop series to engage homeless women in the creative process. Three cohorts of women will be brought together from local programs including Gathering for Women, iHelp, and Women in Transition. Each workshop provides a safe space for participants to experience bookmaking, journaling, painting and printmaking, while building self-reflection and inter-connections. The intimate process and sense of accomplishment that comes from self-expression through art is a keystone for deepening connections between the women, their peers and Critical Ground.
While each woman engages in her own exploration, our goal is to create “community” within the group as well as the artwork itself. The MMA exhibition opens on Nov. 6, 2020 will include a collaborative installation piece, composed of floor-canvas painted modules created by each of the women, in addition to new work by CG artists. In an effort to create awareness leading to social action, the partnering organizations will design a marketing arm to help transform this crisis in Monterey County.
