The world of hand-made books has it all. Color, image, shape, texture, movement, it is portable, easily shareable and doesn’t take up a lot of space! This 3 hour workshop is concentrated in basic skills-building that are found in most artist book forms including paper tearing, folding, measuring, cutting, gluing and wrapping book board, and simple sewing.

We will make several small folded and sewn book forms which are core to the Artist Book medium; all of which can be replicated and altered into works of art.  A prepared supply kit with pre-cut materials will make this short and sweet workshop a breeze for beginners ($8) Additional tools and supplies required. See supply list.

This soft-cover binding has been used throughout hundreds of years with variations and adaptations through time and cultures.  Essentially, the text block and sections are sewn through the cover where slots have been made at each sewing station. This creates a visible staggered line pattern made from the thread weaving in and out of the spine. For years, I have used this binding as a journal due to being light-weight and flexible and keeping the size consistent by using 8 ½ x 11 resume paper for the text block. During this workshop, artists can choose to either use heavyweight decorative paper (or repurposed prints and drawings) for the cover wrapper, or lightweight canvas.

"Want a beautiful and sturdy book without needing to sew? Do you need a structure that lays flat when opened? Are you ready for a book that cures what ails ya and ends world hunger, probably?*  (ie: Are you ready to make a book that soothes your soul?) Well, look no further than the Drum Leaf Binding! The Drum Leaf Binding (attributed to Tim Ely, with variations put forth by Karen Hamner) is an adhesive based structure that utilizes heavyweight paper. Single folios are adhered with a minimal amount of glue at the spine, with the fore-edges tipped (or “drummed) on with an additional bead of glue. The result is a book with a seamless page spread that remains flexible enough to lay completely flat. It is perfect for printmakers, Plein air artists, book artists, artist artists, and photographers alike.
