Copper Etching Series

This series is for students with all ranges of experience. Participants will learn how to choose appropriate images for each of the techniques explored with the goal of optimizing the medium to express the idea. Traditional grounds will be used in order to achieve optimal results. Each section allows plenty of time to get comfortable with the process and to create successful prints through a variety of inking, wiping and printing methods.

Line Etch: The first and most basic of the etching techniques, line, is not only the backbone of etching, it is also a wonderful tool for achieving expressive imagery on any level. This section will engage students with specific drawing practices using pencil, pen and of course the scribe. Students with previous experience in etching, will learn new markmaking techniques and ways to layer lines for sensitive values.

Softground Etch:
Softground is a pliable and forgiving ground that allows for a multitude of image making practices. Softgrounds claim to fame is its capacity to replicate texture from fabrics, nature, and even fingerprints. Students may explore image-making using this ground for line drawings that are gestural and fluid, to images that reflect value through overlapping patterns and image made purely from texture.
